Our Approach & Programmes
At CIE – Centre for International Heritage Activities – we focus on heritage justice. This isn’t about legal systems, but about people and communities. We believe that heritage and memory can be powerful tools for empowerment, inclusion, and meaningful change.
We work to create a more inclusive cultural landscape by challenging dominant narratives and amplifying voices that have often been silenced. By engaging critically with the past—with care, creativity, and solidarity—we help build fairer, more sustainable futures where communities can reclaim and shape their own stories, places, and traditions.
Our work blends the practical and the academic, supporting communities on the ground while contributing to broader discussions on heritage policy and practice. We see heritage as essential to how people understand their past and navigate their future—whether socially, environmentally, or politically.
CIE is built on collaboration. Our projects are shaped by the needs and ideas of the people we work with. Through partnerships with researchers, artists, and heritage professionals, we bring together different skills and perspectives to explore new ways of working with heritage.
Grounded in three core programmes:
CIE – Institute for Heritage Justice
Where critical research and education come together. This programme explores how heritage connects to justice and equity, encouraging communities to engage deeply and thoughtfully with the past.
Our creative and collaborative space. A hub for co-creation, where artists, practitioners, and researchers come together to explore bold, new ideas and cultural expressions through heritage.
Focused on innovation, digital heritage, and interpretation. This programme develops tools, methods, and storytelling approaches that make heritage more engaging, accessible, and future-oriented.

Through our wide range of expertise, this section provides pedagogical tools for those interested in delving deeper into the fields of heritage documentation, community narratives, material culture, and museology, among others.
